Tired of politics as usual on Long Island? Tired of party leaders making deals and leaving the voters no choice?

Mr. Schaffer went beyond that and torpedoed a grassroot’s candidate’s run for a seat on the Town of Babylon Council by putting forward a dummy democratic candidate for the seat. The dummy candidate, Claire McKeon, is not on the ballot for the town council seat and the seat is left empty by the Democrats to fulfill Mr. Schaffer’s quid pro quo deal with Independence Party to not run a Democrat for the seat.

The grassroot candidate only ran for the position after confirming the Democrats did not plan to run their own pick, then the Democrats put forward Ms. McKeon only after the grassroot candidate started the petition process. The grassroot candidate dropped out of the race to avoid a primary and work with the Democrats and in support of Ms. McKeon. The dummy candidate is now out and running for the county legislature instead.

Political party fusion – aka cross party endorsement – is illegal in 42 states because it’s considered election rigging. NYS is one of the 8 states where it is legal https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electoral_fusion.

Pace Law School at Pace University did a study on minor party cross endorsment in NYS and concluded it was not good for the voters http://digitalcommons.pace.edu/plr/vol29/iss4/5/

No study has been done on major party cross endorsement in NYS but the evidence is clear – it results in 100% victory for the candidate endorsed by both republican and democratic party leaders. As does a candidate being supported by one of the major political parties and being unopposed by the other major political party.
